Economic Analysis of Property Rights (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions)
Economic Analysis of Property Rights (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions) This study offers a unified theoretical structure to analyze exchange, formation of economic rights, and organization. The cost of measuring accurately all assets’ attributes is prohibitive. Therefore, rights are never fully delineated and others (using theft, adverse selection, free riding, and shirking) may appropriate one’s assets. The central question is how people allocate resources and organize their activities to maximize the value of their rights. The approach emphasizes nonmarket constraints, but is also applicable to market economies. It is useful for analyzing allocations within organizations as well as allocation by voting and charity. Chapters have been extended for this second edition and a new chapter devoted to the firm has been added.
Customer Review: The basic question is “Who owns what?”
This book deals with the economic sense of property rights, in other words, “who owns what?”. Property rights are not defined uniformly across cultures since societies have discretion as to how to define those rights. In fact, they are very often not perfectly delineated. People can delineate those rights under the shadow of the law or ask a court to settle their case. The common view that commodities are homogenous entities with only one attribute gives rise to the conclusion that the right is either owned by someone or not owned. In real life, assets incorporate several attributes, whose ownership is not always perfectly delineated. Under certain circumstances it is too costly to measure and protect all assets’ attributes. When circumstances change, conflicts can arise. Neoclassical literature instead assumes simplistically that transaction costs are zero and that all property rights are perfectly well delineated. Once you can take into consideration intermediate cases (common and private goods, environment, contractual rights etc) as Barzel does in this book, you can have a more complete model to price goods, which come logically from well-defined first principles. A must read for public economists and (why not?) lawyers.
Customer Review: Superb treatise on property rights.
This book is written from the neoclassical perspective and takes a sensible and thoughtful approach to property rights. This book provides the reader insight into how property rights define how society organizes itself. Building on Public Choice Theory, Barzel explores how property rights are delineated in many situations, addressing head on the Tragedy of the Commons.
For any study of law and economics this is a must read. But the reader must be cautioned that this is not an Economics 101 book. A solid grounding in the writings of Buchanan, Tullock, Arrow, Ostrum, Coase, and Olson are what is required to make this a comprehensible read.

It is as up-to-date as possible, as it includes the Trademark Treaty Revision of 1998 and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 and the 1998 Copyright Term Extension Act and Fairness in Music Licensing Act. This work was originally published as a monograph in the International Encyclopedia of Laws, Intellectual Property
Customer Review: Excellent Study Aide and/or Quick Reference
While modeslty priced this book provides a good review of US intellectual property laws, including copyright, patent, and trademark law. While comprehensive treatment of even a single subject would require many volumes, this book does provide excellent coverage of US intellectual property laws.
I highly recommended this book for law students searching for a study aide (I have done just that for my Intro to IP class). I also highly recommend this book for attorneys not well versed in intellectual property who are looking for a comprehensive primer.
Becaues this book contains numerous citations it could also be very useful as a quick reference or deskbook for intellectual property practitioners and law professors.

Philistines at the Hedgerow : Passion and Property in the Hamptons
Philistines at the Hedgerow : Passion and Property in the Hamptons Destined to be a coast-to-coast major trade paperback bestseller in the summer of 1999. Steven Gaines is a bestselling storyteller with a special gift for capturing social nuance, colourful detail, and quirks of character. Here are a few examples: A well-to-do former ballet dancer arrested for stealing his neighbors furniture, and showered with thank-you notes from his victims, who admired his skills at refinishing; the aunt and cousin of a First Lady, who for many years inhabited a Gothic mansion with twenty-eight cats (and no litter box); a locally prominent family who played host to Captain Kidd in 1699 and still have the buried treasure to prove it; the Oscar-winning actress whose tearful performance before a local zoning board failed to secure her a permit to build a swimming pool; a self-made man of outsized appetites who realized his ambition of becoming the most powerful real estate agent in the Hamptons, and died choking on a piece of steak; the world-renowned painter who, at a black-tie dinner party, attacked his hosts piano with an ice pick; as well as many of todays Hollywood, Wall Street, and fashion and art-world potentates, all vying for a slice of land still inhabited by families that have farmed and fished the region for generations. Also available as a Time Warner AudioBook
Customer Review: Dated but still fascinating
Philistines at the Hedgerow was one of those books that was the read of the summer when first released. It still an interesting read but in the nine years since it was written it has become very out of date. Maybe its time for the author to add some new chapters. If not a whole new book.
Customer Review: Couldn’t get into it
My husband & I wanted to read this book together. We couldn’t get into it. Perhaps if you are more familiar with the Hamptons, all the detail would be interesting to you, but we weren’t compelled to continue… We found the writing ‘thick’ and the story laborious.

Viscoelastic Properties of Polymers
Viscoelastic Properties of Polymers Viscoelastic behavior reflects the combined viscous and elastic responses, under mechanical stress, of materials which are intermediate between liquids and solids in character. Polymersthe basic materials of the rubber and plastic industries and important to the textile, petroleum, automobile, paper, and pharmaceutical industries as wellexhibit viscoelasticity to a pronounced degree. Their viscoelastic properties determine the mechanical performance of the final products of these industries, and also the success of processing methods at intermediate stages of production. Viscoelastic Properties of Polymers examines, in detail, the effects of the many variables on which the basic viscoelastic properties depend. These include temperature, pressure, and time; polymer chemical composition, molecular weight and weight distribution, branching and crystallinity; dilution with solvents or plasticizers; and mixture with other materials to form composite systems. With guidance by molecular theory, the dependence of viscoelastic properties on these variables can be simplified by introducing certain ancillary concepts such as the fractional free volume, the monomeric friction coefficient, and the spacing between entanglement loci, to provide a qualitative understanding and in many cases a quantitative prediction of how to achieve desired results. The phenomenological theory of viscoelasticitywhich permits interrelation of the results of different types of experimentsis presented first, with many useful approximation procedures for calculations given. A wide variety of experimental methods is then described, with critical evaluation of their applicability to polymeric materials of different consistencies and in different regions of the time scale (or, for oscillating deformations, the frequency scale). A review of the present state of molecular theory follows, so that viscoelasticity can be related to the motions of flexible polymer molecules and their entanglements and network junctions. The dependence of viscoestic properties on temperature and pressure, and its descriptions using reduced variables, are discussed in detail. Several chapters are then devoted to the dependence of viscoelastic properties on chemical composition, molecular weight, presence of diluents, and other features, for several characteristic classes of polymer materials. Finally, a few examples are given to illustrate the many potential applications of these principles to practical problems in the processing and use of rubbers, plastics, and fibers, and in the control of vibration and noise. The third edition has been brought up to date to reflect the important developments, in a decade of exceptionally active research, which have led to a wider use of polymers, and a wider recognition of the importance and range of application of viscoelastic properties. Additional data have been incorporated, and the books chapters on dilute solutions, theory of undiluted polymers, plateau and terminal zones, cross-linked polymers, and concentrated solutions have been extensively rewritten to take into account new theories and new experimental results. Technical managers and research workers in the wide range of industries in which polymers play an important role will find that the book provides basic information for practical applications, and graduate students in chemistry and engineering will find, in its illustrations with real data and real numbers, an accessible introduction to the principles of viscoelasticity.
Customer Review: A treasure!
Viscoelastic properties of polymers includes a very detailed description of polymer rheology, covering both the mechanical aspects of rheometers, as well as the description of molecular basis of viscoelasticity. The book is highly recommended to everyone embarking on a career in polymer viscoelasticity. Ferry has essentially compiled all the important material relevant to polymer viscoelasticity, and hence the chapters serve as excellent reviews of respective fields. Since the last edition is well over 20 years old, many recent aspects of viscoelaticity are not present in the book (quite understandable:))! Nevertheless, this book is a must have to delve into viscoelaticity, the knowledge and its evolution.

Customer Review: Fast and easy
This is a perfect book for someone looking to grasp easy and fast extremely complex legal issues. The author has become one of my favorites.
Customer Review: I took this class from her
I took Marital Property with Professor Goldberg, so I found this E and E really helpful in studying for her test. She took most of her material for examples and sample questions directly from this book. Therefore, this book was extremely helpful to me.
How helpful it would be in a different setting? I don’t know. But I think overall, its a pretty good supplement to have, especially the flow chart regarding pre and post Lucas analysis.

Economic Approaches to Intellectual Property Policy, Litigation, and Management
Economic Approaches to Intellectual Property Policy, Litigation, and Management Over the past century, the value and importance of intellectual property has grown rapidly worldwide. While it is crucial for companies to successfully manage their intangible assets, they face difficult questions in attempting to navigate the complex business and legal environment that surrounds IP rights.
Economic Approaches to Intellectual Property Policy, Litigation, and Management discusses real-world tools and strategies at the forefront of economic thinking about many of todays most prominent intellectual property issues. Co-edited by Dr. Gregory K. Leonard and Dr. Lauren J. Stiroh, this book is an anthology of 23 articles by economists associated with NERA, whose analyses have played a crucial role in numerous landmark legal and regulatory cases. The chapters explore topics ranging from the valuation of IP damages to intellectual property rights protection in China and the antitrust implications of standard setting and patent pools.
The book addresses such key questions as:
How should the owner of IP rights be compensated when those rights are violated?
What role should antitrust and competition policy play in intellectual property matters?
How can companies more accurately assess their R&D investments and strategies?
Should emerging economic powers implement and enforce more stringent intellectual property rights?
Economic Approaches to Intellectual Property Policy, Litigation, and Management should prove to be of interest to economists, lawyers, policy makers, executives managing IP portfolios, and law and business schools

Happy About Apartment Management: 30 Years of Expert Tips and Advice on Multifamily Property Management
Happy About Apartment Management: 30 Years of Expert Tips and Advice on Multifamily Property Management REAL ESTATE can be a smart, lucrative investment, because it shelters property appreciation from taxes while allowing owners to deduct interest and depreciation. In addition, unlike financial investments, tax-deferred exchanges are common real estate trans-actions. However, many investors ignore real estate because it requires daily management. Still others invest in real estate and attempt to manage their properties themselves to save on management fees.
Most of us have seen infomercials about achieving financial independence by investing in real estate. During my years in property management, I have seen many people build wealth by investing in real estate. I have also seen time forgive some very poor real-estate investments, because fortunately, most bad real estate decisions are forgiven as property values appreciate. So, from my perspective, the key attribute to successful real estate investing is longevity-surviving the period between purchase and sale, while the property works to pay its way.
During the appreciation years, many real estate investors realize how poorly prepared they are to manage property. They experience the enormous stress from evictions because they have not developed appropriate credit-screening techniques that identify potential deadbeats. They are sued for discrimination because they do not understand fair housing regulations. They fall victim to downward economic spirals because they do not understand the relationship between curb appeal, occupancy rates, and rent. Worst of all, they often don’t realize that their properties are under-performing by thousands of dollars each month.
Westlake Realty Group, has successfully managed real estate for over 30 years. They’ve dealt with a number of issues discussed above and can help you avoid them. You’ll find this book a helpful and informative introduction to the fundamentals-and complexities-of property management.
