Intellectual Property Law for Engineers and Scientists
Intellectual Property Law for Engineers and Scientists An excellent text for clients to read before meeting with attorneys so they’ll understand the fundamentals of patent, copyright, trade secret, trademark, mask work, and unfair competition laws
This is not a “do-it-yourself” manual but rather a ready reference tool for inventors or creators that will generate maximum efficiencies in obtaining, preserving and enforcing their intellectual property rights. It explains why they need to secure the services of IPR attorneys
Coverage includes employment contracts, including the ability of engineers to take confidential and secret knowledge to a new job, shop rights and information to help an entrepreneur establish a non-conflicting enterprise when leaving their prior employment
Sample forms of contracts, contract clauses, and points to consider before signing employment agreements are included
Coverage of copyright, software protection, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) as well as the procedural variances in international intellectual property laws and procedures
Customer Review: Excellent choice, great breadth of coverage
I am involved in an infringement team at work and needed to learn more about patent law. I also am involved in product development and wanted to know about trademarks. I looked at several books and selected this one based on its broad coverage and structured approach.
After receiving the book, I was plesantly surprised to learn it is a graduate level text book. It is well written, well organized, and easy to read and understand. I highly recommend it!
Customer Review: Essential reading for anyone creating intellectual property
This is a book whose content is something that I should have read years ago. I am a part-time college instructor, have my own business and edit material for publication. In all three of these areas, questions and conflicts regarding intellectual property have arisen.
The colleges that I teach for have policies that dictate that all instructional material and software the instructor creates for the courses become the property of the college. While I have successfully resisted this policy at two colleges, my defense would have been much stronger had I known what I learned from reading this book.
I generally create my own material for the training I do through my business and my clients and I have had occasional minor differences concerning educational and intellectual property rights. There have been a few occasions when I was working as a contractor, and the contracts that were presented had clauses that would have prevented me from doing any work for anyone else that they perceive as one of their competitors. This has been a major point of disagreement; it has taken several hours of intense negotiation to resolve these issues.
In a previous job, my title was that of research scientist. My employers considered applying for patents on some of programs I wrote. This was nearly a decade ago, before software patents were so commonplace, so they never pursued the matter. Finally, I edit a math journal and occasionally write or edit a book.
In reading about the working situations of others, it is clear that my need for knowledge in the area of intellectual property law is not unique. Everyone who invents physical or cyber products should be aware of the legal standing of what they create. Questions concerning copyright and patentability are nowhere near as easy to resolve as you may think. Even if you sign a contract stating that all you make becomes company property, you still retain some, albeit limited, rights to the product. With more and more workers performing tasks on contract and telecommuting, this area is becoming increasingly muddled. The fact that I developed training material on my own time and using my equipment allowed me to successfully resist the attempts of the colleges to acquire the rights.
The first section of the book deals with patents, what they are, how to perform a patent search for prior art, how to obtain one, what can be patented, the requirements for originality and non-obviousness; how to continue the patent process if your application is rejected, how to obtain competent legal assistance, how to enforce patent rights and how to use a patent right as a business asset. I read these sections with fascination, I follow some of the “patent wars” processes in the trade journals, but until I read the material on patents, I never realized how complex the patent process is.
The next section deals with employment contracts and non-compete restrictions, something that affects all workers in the technical areas. It was heartening to read that while employers have a lot of power to enforce non-compete provisions, it is not absolute and workers are generally not denied their right to earn a living using their skills.
The next chapters cover copyright issues, what copyright is, how long it lasts, what the requirements are for originality, what can be copyrighted, the consequences of recent legislation, and mask work protection rights. The final chapters deal with trade secret law, trademarks and cybersquatting.
As I organized my thoughts before beginning this review, the question that I pondered many times and in as many ways as I could think of was: “Is there any area of information technology where a worker would not benefit from reading at least several chapters of this book?” After hours of thought, the answer is that there is no such area. Every line of code you write or alter is potentially part of a patentable product. There is no dispute that intellectual property is rapidly becoming the greatest single asset that many companies have. I have no way of knowing when it will occur, but at some point the worldwide monetary value of intellectual property will exceed that of physical assets. With this backdrop, understanding the basics of intellectual property will become a business skill as essential as knowing the fundamental rules of economics. To some, that is already the case.
Therefore, whatever your position in the intellectual property food chain, this is a book that you must read. I may have learned more valuable information from this book than from any other that I have read. It is definitely on my best books of the year list.

Income Property Valuation
Income Property Valuation Ideal for a two and four year college course, this text provides comprehensive coverage of the appraisal of real estate income property.
Customer Review: Income Property Valuation Text Review
This book is used in my graduate-level Real Estate Appraisal class. I found the book to be riddled with errors and typos (for example, the bottom of page 293 shows an example property with an 8% LTV (!!)) and it is a bit dated, however, the use of a CDROM to show examples and a trial ARGUS program is nice. One major problem is that the numerous problems outlined at the end of each chapter are never answered in the book. Thus, the poor student hoping to check to see if his homework answers are correct is out of luck. The case study at the end of the book, the capstone project I assume, is an appraisal of an apartment complex. As users of ARGUS know, an apartment complex cannot be modeled well in ARGUS. The authors should have known that, and its clear that they are out of touch with how real appraisals are done. Overall, I’d say its a typical sloppy textbook written by academics with little to no knowledge of the real world….

Fundamentals of Semiconductors: Physics and Materials Properties
Fundamentals of Semiconductors: Physics and Materials Properties This third updated edition of Fundamentals of Semiconductors attempts to fill the gap between a general solid-state physics textbook and research articles by providing detailed explanations of the electronic, vibrational, transport, and optical properties of semiconductors. The approach is physical and intuitive rather than formal and pedantic. Theories are presented to explain experimental results. This textbook has been written with both students and researchers in mind. Its emphasis is on understanding the physical properties of Si and similar tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors. The explanations are based on physical insights. Each chapter is enriched by an extensive collection of tables of material parameters, figures, and problems. Many of these problems “lead the student by the hand” to arrive at the results.
Customer Review: The best book in the market
This book is an excellent reference book on semiconductors in general. The physics behind semiconductor theory is discussed very well, however, if you are looking for a book regarding semiconductor devices or electronics, this is not what you are looking for.
One advantage of this book is that it contains a fairly large section for “group theory”, if you are using it in your studies.
Electronic, transport and especially optical properties of semiconductors are mentioned very extensively and clearly. There is also a whole chapter on photoemission, which is very useful. The concept of quantum confinement is addressed independently with illustrative examples.
If you are interested in semiconductors and want to buy “one” book which you can use and consult all the time, this is the book you need. The authors are some of the best in the World on semiconductors.
Customer Review: Best book on semiconductor PHYSICS
I’m a Ph.D on physics, I read this book from page to page and worked out the problems.
This is an excellent book on the physics of semiconductors, NOT on semiconductor devices! The text is well written. The physical concept is clearly explained, mostly with a diagram or a graph. The formulae are carefully deducted without wasting too much time and space. I must add a few words on the problems. From all the physics textbooks I’ve read, only Claude Cohen-Tannoudji’s Quantum Mechanics book is comparable. Those problems usually are about the the formulae, such as k.p. perturbation method and Luttinger Hamiltonian, etc., appeared in the main text but its detail is not appropriate there. The problems are by no means easy. Actually, some of them are really hard. For example, it took me a lot of time to work out the 6 by 6 k.p. perturbation matrix! In the process of working out those problems, I had a better understanding on the computational physics. You don’t see that in a normal textbook!
The references are the classical or landstone papers about a specific subject, very good for further research.
In summary, this is an excellent textbook, if you want to study it hard.

Customer Review: Excellent Study Resource!
I just got through taking my Property I final and I can tell you from experience that this book was *very* helpful in preparing me! The exams are challenging and realistic. Also, in the answer key, it doesn’t just tell you what the right answer is, but it tells you why it’s right and why the other answers are wrong. Another thing I liked about it is that it has the subject matters broken down in the index by question numbers. After taking the exams, I was able to quickly determine where my strong areas were and where I needed to study more. I highly recommend this book for all 1Ls!

Optical Properties of Photonic Crystals
Optical Properties of Photonic Crystals This book is the first comprehensive textbook on the optical properties of photonic crystals. It deals not only with the properties of the radiation modes inside the crystals but also with their peculiar optical response to external fields. A general theory of linear and nonlinear optical response is given in a clear and detailed fashion using Green’s function method. The symmetry of the eigenmodes is treated systematically using group theory to show how it affects the optical properties of photonic crystals. Important recent developments such as the enhancement of stimulated emissions, second harmonic generation, quadrature-phase squeezing, and low-threshold lasing are also treated in detail and made understandable. Numerical methods are also emphasized. Thus this book provides both introductory knowledge for graduate and undergraduate students and also important ideas for researchers in this field.

Customer Review: Review of An Introduction to the Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers
It wasn’t great, but it was a required book for the class I took, so I suppose it was everything I needed. That’s about all I can say. I actually barely read anything in the class.
Customer Review: A reader
This book is a good introduction to understanding the mechanical properties of solid polymers from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint. It is suitable for university students with some knowledge of the physical properties of polymers but advanced enough to be used in a graduate course. This is book is a much more manageable version of a previous book by I.M. Ward, “Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers”. It has been useful as basic reference and provides further references should more details be desired. Highly recommended addition to any persons collection of polymer science and engineering books. The only drawback is the cost. It is a bit disappointing to see the price almost double in less than 3 years.
