The Development Dilemma: The Political Economy of Intellectual Property Rights in the International System (Law and Society (New York, N.Y.).)

The Development Dilemma: The Political Economy of Intellectual Property Rights in the International System (Law and Society (New York, N.Y.).) Ostergard argues that developing nations adopt stronger intellectual property rights protection in response to international pressures and not as a basis for economic growth and development. Using a new methodology for the measurement of intellectual property rights protection, Ostergard presents empirical evidence to show that, as developing nations become more integrated into the international economic system, they are faced with greater external pressures to increase intellectual property rights protection. Hence, their decision to adopt stronger intellectual property rights protection is purely political. This runs counter to Western arguments for intellectual property rights based on the assumption that stronger intellectual property rights promote economic growth and development.

Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State

Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State One of Engels’ most important works. It is based on a detailed synopsis made by Marx in 1880-81 of the work of the American anthropologist, Lewis H. Morgan.
Customer Review: they were wrong but you have to know why
Marx and Engels made a fundamentally wrong guess about the nature of human beings. But it is very important to understand their line of reasoning, because they developed quite a few critical insights along the way. Due to political charge associated with their teachings it is practically impossible to find suitable third party narrative of their works. So, the only way to enlighten yourself is to dig right down into originals.
Customer Review: Why doesn’t the war of the sexes ever end?
Why is society so cruel? It seems to be self-defeating. Why doesn’t the war of the sexes ever end? In no other species do the two sexes battle against each other.

In this book we learn that things weren’t always this way. In fact, oppression and exploitation are recent inventions, if we count that human history dates back EIGHTY thousand years since the rise of homo sapiens sapiens. At one point most cultures suddenly became sedentary and agriculturalist – and private property in the land emerged. Private property of land resulted in an overthrow of the matriarchal family by its male members and in the establishment of a separate group of men who violently protect unequal relationships (the state as we know it today). All happened together in a revolution that occurred in the course of just a few generations some SIX thousand years ago.

Nonetheless, the moral of this story is one of hope. If we were capable of remaking ourselves once, and based on that have advanced dramatically in a limited sense of creating material culture, then humankind can remake itself again and found a culture that enriches all aspects of everyone’s lives. But this time the redesign will have to be conscious and conscientious, the beginning of a humane human history in which all participate on an equal basis. Such is the future that socialism and communism promise for us.

As a companion to this volume, be sure to read Women’s Evolution, by Reed. Written a century later, it shows that anthropology’s evidence overwhelmingly coincides with the theory Engels put forward in this book.

Great Big Book For Landlords and Property Managers (Great Big Book for Landlords & Property Managers)

Great Big Book For Landlords and Property Managers (Great Big Book for Landlords & Property Managers)

Everything landlords need to know to find and keep high-paying tenants

A landlord’s profit is directly related to his treatment of tenants. This comprehensive, practical guide teaches you how to find and keep quality tenants. Great Big Book for Landlords and Property Managers offers tips for managing relations with tenants and provides valuable management tools that you can customize for your own use. It discusses both residential and commercial tenants; although most books deal with residential properties, most investment-grade properties are commercial. It shows real estate investors with an entrepreneurial mindset how to achieve success as a landlord.

Customer Review: More than a property management guide
From the title, you might think this is just another guide to managing rental properties. While it certainly is that, it’s also much more. The author begins with a discussion of entrepreneurship and real estate, pointing out that real estate investors are entrepreneurs by the nature of what they do.
After explaining a variety of investment vehicles, Rider boils it down: “You have to buy into the idea that the single best asset you can have related to any real estate investment is a solid, rent-paying tenant.” He describes how to manage and maintain both residential and commercial properties, beginning with a thorough explanation of land use regulations which dictate what developers can do with property and then how owners and tenants can use it.

This book is rich with charts, lists, and illustrations. Rider’s own experience validates his information and advice. Throughout the book, Rider includes definitions in boxes to further explain the terms he is using (in addition to a comprehensive glossary). Readers will also appreciate his “Heads Up” notes with warnings and alerts.
Rider takes complicated issues and makes them easy to understand. While he doesn’t discuss how to market for tenants, he does give clear advice for negotiating lease terms and maintaining your relationship with tenants once you have them. Great Big Book for Landlords and Property Managers: The Care and Keeping of Tenants is a must for any serious real estate investor’s library.

Customer Review: Good information
This was a very informative book that would provide value to anyone in the business.
Customer Review: Not at all what I expected based on the title.
I have read about a dozen real estate and landlording books so far. Based on the title of this one, I expected some heavy hitting information about Property Management and Landlording. Instead, what I got was a general overview of all of the topics in the table of contents, but no really good in depth material about any of it.

I also didn’t like the fact that the first several chapters are about how to decide if you’re cut out for this business. I was under the impression that anyone buying a book with this title would already own a property or at least be well under way.

Overall, this is a good SUPER newbie book, but if you’ve read even one other, don’t bother.

The International Political Economy Of Intellectual Property Rights (New Horizons in Intellectual Property Series)

The International Political Economy Of Intellectual Property Rights (New Horizons in Intellectual Property Series) This book investigates the realm of intellectual property rights (IPRs) within the context of international political economy. In particular, it examines the extent to which powerful interest groups, such as pharmaceutical multinational companies, influence the political dynamism underlying the field of IPRs.

Meir Perez Pugatch argues that a pure economic approach does not provide a sufficient or satisfactory explanation for the creation of intellectual property rights, most notably patents. The author instead suggests that a dynamic approach, based on the international political economy of interest groups and systemic outcomes, provides a better starting point for explaining how the international intellectual property agenda is determined.

The book explores the manner in which the R&D-based pharmaceutical industry in Europe organized and operated between 1995 and 1999 in order to secure its interests with regard to the agreement on trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights (TRIPs) of the World Trade Organization.

The International Political Economy of Intellectual Property Rights will be warmly welcomed by scholars, practitioners, and government officials interested in the fields of international trade and intellectual property policy, intellectual property law and international business. The potential readership is as likely to come from developed as from developing countries. The latter may find the process of IP policy making of particular interest and relevance given current international IP developments.
